Holland Christian tennis soars to third in state as doubles pair clinches state title


The Holland Christian boys tennis team moved up from Division 4, where the Maroons won the state title last year, back to their usual Division 3.

The Maroons proved to be one of the top teams in the state in any division, finishing third and sending three flights to the finals and earning one flight championship on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Midland Tennis Center.

Holland Christian scored 26 points to finish behind Bloomfield Hills Cranrbook Kingswoo (24), which held off second-place Detroit Country Day by a single point. Unity Christian was eighth (10).

Eli Whitmore and Evan Disselkoen knocked off Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood in the finals, 6-3, 6-2, to earn the state championship. The duo reached the semifinals at No. 3 doubles where they beat Ann Arbor Greenhills in a three-set thriller, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.

The Maroons had two other flights reach the finals.

At No. 3 singles, Holland Christian’s Nico Grosso also reached the finals. Grosso had a bye, then beat Trenton’s Lucas Wright 6-0, 6-1, then topped Haslett’s Gautier Dorlencourt 5-7, 6-3, 7-5 in the quarterfinals and Detroit Country Day’s Adam Mahmoud 6-3, 6-1 in the semis. Gross lost to top-seeded Kenneth Hu of Cranbrook Kingswood 6-0, 6-0 in the finals.

The No. 4 doubles team of Jonathan Haig and Carter Leep beat Ludington 6-0, 6-0 and Trenton 6-2, 6-0 to reach the semifinals, where they beat Ann Arbor Greenhills 6-1, 6-2 to reach the finals. The duo lost to Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 6-3, 6-4 in the finals.

Holland Christian’s Dylan Becksvoort reached the state semifinals at No. 2 singles and lost to Cranbrook Kingswood’s Eli Rosen in the semis, 6-2, 6-2. Becksvoort started with a bye, then beat Forest Hills Eastern’s Henry Elms 6-0, 6-0, then beat Haslett’s Jackson Clark 0-6, 6-2, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

In doubles, Holland Christian’s Michael Gorno and Graham Tanis had a bye, then beat Petoskey 6-3, 6-2 and Big Rapids 6-1, 6-3 to reach the semifinals where they were defeated by Detroit Country Day, 6-3, 6-4.

At No. 2 doubles, Jack DeYoung and Brody Bergsma reached the semifinals after beating Petoskey 6-0, 6-1 and Haslett 6-1, 6-0. In the semis, they lost to Cranbrook Kingswood 7-6(6), 6-2.

Holland Christian’s Lucas VanWieren reached the quarterfinals at No. 1 singles. He beat Forest Hills Eastern’s Emerson Chiodini 7-6, 6-4, then Chelsea’s Logan Fansler 6-4, 6-4 before falling to Big Rapids’ Carson Coles 6-0, 6-1 in the quarterfinals.

Zeke DeYoung reached the quarterfinals at No. 4 singles. After a bye, he beat Big Rapids’ Carter Smalley 6-3, 6-4 then lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 to Ann Arbor Greenhills’ Evan Chung in the quarters.
