Stromberg Bandit waterproof jacket

Reviewed by Matt Coles

Today, it is quite rare that you can get a high-quality waterproof jacket for under £100. Stromberg have nailed that with the Bandit Waterproof Golf Jacket. The quality is not diminished, despite the price, with the Bandit Jacket having fabric that is both waterproof and breathable (20000mm/10000g/m²r). This allows for maximum comfort and the ability to stay dry during those heavy downpours throughout the winter months.

It is a stylish piece, with the clean black and white contrasts on the front and back, and the wrist hems are adjustable to make sure that the sleeves don’t flap about too much in windy conditions.

The jacket, like most, does restrict movement somewhat, but it is not bad enough for you to be completely put off with your golf swing.

The Bandit Waterproof Golf Jacket is best paired with the Bandit Waterproof Golf Trousers – also from Stromberg – to complete the set while out on the course.

PROS:

  • Cheap compared to other brands
  • Comfortable
  • Stylish

CONS:

  • Restricts movement somewhat

RRP: £99.99

Sizes: S-5XL

Colours: Black

Stromberg Men’s Weather Tech Waterproof

The Stromberg Men’s Weather Tech waterproof jacket was a joy to wear. I tested the dark blue version which I really like the look of. A really clean aesthetic with some tidily placed Stromberg branding that sits parallel to the zip. Usefully, the jacket comes equipped with two front pockets which have zips so you can easily store your valubles. Playing in the jacket was really easy, no restriction on my swing and was incredibly lightweight. It was really easy to slide on and off in time for the start and end of an unexpected shower and due to the lighweight and flexibility it helped when packing the jacket away into my bag. It rolls up really easily and fits into your medium size pocket of your bag with no issues.

Overall I really like Stromberg’s latest tech waterproof, looks really smart, pacticial for all year around and a good price point for golf apparel.

PROS:

  • Really good fit
  • Smart
  • Good pocket space
  • Great price point

CONS:

  • Fitting is slightly on the large side

Sizes: 30’’- 46’’ waist

FootJoy HydroTour Jacket

The latest iteration of the HydroTour builds on the strengths of previous models.

The 3-layer fabric delivers strong waterproofing, breathability and windproofing features which makes it quite a warm jacket.

It offers 4-way stretch for ease of swinging. All zips are seam sealed. You get the benefit of DrySeal technology to the collar. Essentially this is an inner collar which sits closely and comfortable to the back of your neck whilst an outer collar allows water to drain away through some grommets (see picture carousel). It’s quite neat but you may well get more benefit from wearing a wide-brimmed rainhat.

I tested the version in medium in Niagara/Flint colourway which looked smart and stylish. The sizing was just about ok. If in doubt, size up. I’d regard this very much as a third layer to be worn over a polo and thin midlayer, because it is pretty insulating. I was pleased to see the underarm zip vents which are easy to operate and do really help to cool you down.

On the course, I could swing comfortably with no excess rustling or other noise. The two zippered pockets were fleece lined and a decent size. I also liked the internal left breast pocket. The DrySeal collar was easy to use and provided added comfort.

I have tested the jacket in showery conditions and, as you would expect, I remained dry and comfortable with no hint of water ingress.

If the rain stops and you want to stow your jacket, you will find that it takes up a bit of space when compared to a lighter weight rainjacket. And it is this slight lack of flexibility of use that prevents this jacket getting a full five stars.

It comes with a three-year waterproof warranty, and I’m sure will keep you dry and warm over those winter months.

PROS:

  • Good range of colours
  • Waterproof and windproof
  • Stylish design

CONS:

  • Lacks the flexibility of some raingear

RRP: £275 / $350

ProQuip Stormforce PX8 Rain Jacket

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

ProQuip is a Scottish golf clothing company founded in 1981.  Their golf weather wear is so trusted at the highest level that no less than 20 Ryder Cup Captains, on both sides of the Atlantic, have sent their teams into battle with ProQuip golf waterproofs in the bag.

So, I was excited to test the latest offering from ProQuip, the PX (for Performance-Xtreme) 8, which is new for 2024. The company describe it as their best-in-class rainwear and it comes with a lifetime waterproof guarantee.

I tested the version in Medium size which fitted my 173cm 74kg frame nicely. It comes in a choice of 3 colours. The dark grey/light grey, with flashes of white around the collar, sleeves and pockets, looked smart and stylish. And the jacket had just about all you could wish for in a waterproof garment. There’s a luxurious soft feel to the outer fabric, four-way stretch, and a comfortable mesh inner lining.

There is a drawcord closure at the hem, two large zippered side pockets, a roomy chest pocket and a ‘hidden’ inside pocket.

On the course, the four-way stretch meant that the PX8 could be worn over anything from one to three layers with ease. The jacket felt roomy, but never baggy. I tested it in heavy rain and remained dry throughout. When swinging, the jacket remained comfortable and quiet, with no distraction from noise. The jacket construction offers warmth and windproofing as well as being waterproof.

So, this is not only a fully featured waterproof jacket at a reasonable price, it is also all the winter golfing jacket you will ever need. It gets a deserved 5 stars and comes highly recommended.

  • Warm and windproof
  • Tremendous value – especially as now slightly discounted

Ping Men’s Sensordry S2 Full Zip Waterproof Jacket

Part of Ping’s Autumn/Winter includes the men’s DWR Sensordry S2 full zip waterproof jacket. It is available in three different colourways, all of which look really smart.

The Sensordry jacket is packed full of technology which is impressive considering how lightweight and breathable the material is. It makes it perfect for rolling up into your bag when not required but also lightweight to carry and wear.

The material consists of stretch and thermal properties to help with flexibility and keeping you warm on the course, but the breathability stops you from overheating which can often be a problem with winter apparel.

In summary, a great addition to your wardrobe if you’re in the market for a new waterproof jacket this winter. Really comfortable, looks great and most importantly repels water perfectly!

Ping SensorDry S2 Pro Jacket

Reviewed by Ross Bousfield

The first thing I noticed when putting on the PING SensorDry S2 Pro Jacket was the brushed tricot inner lining which provides both additional comfort and warmth. The only issue I did have with the lining, albeit a minor one, was it meant having to take my glove off to put the jacket on which is not ideal when it is raining.

A feature I did like was the adjustable nature of the collars, neck and the shock cord on the hem, all of which felt like they were all contributing to minimising the opportunity for water to encroach.

The jacket has a classic aesthetic and comes in a choice of colours meaning there should be something to suit everyone. Most importantly the PING SensorDry S2 Pro Jacket performed well in wet weather and allowed a freedom of movement that meant the golf swing was completely unrestricted, something I have not always found in other waterpoof jackets.

Callaway Stormlite II Waterproof Golf Jacket

Reviewed by Gillon Fabbroni

I am a hard person to please when it comes to waterproof golf  jackets.

I hate anything too restrictive but if jackets are too large that comes with its own issues.

It was with some interest that I checked out the Callaway Stormlite II Waterproof golf jacket.

The one I tried was blue with black trim and it looked very smart. Callaway describe its opti-repel technology, the seams are fully sealed and it comes with a reassuring 2 year waterproof warranty.

In use I found it to be comfortable and the swing-tech technology functioned extremely well. It doesn’t feel very stretchy but this is down to the clever design. When I examined it closely I could see that it stretched more in one direction than the other. This made it easy to swing the club.

It comes with adjustable cuffs and 2 zip pockets.

The fit is pretty true to size although if, like me, your six-pack is not what it used to be then I would consider going up a size as it not over-long.

PROS

  • Fully featured
  • Great technology
  • 2 year waterproof warranty
  • Great value for money.

  • Not very long so consider sizing up

Abacus Men’s Pitch 37.5 rain jacket

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

The Pitch sits at the top of the range of waterproofs from Abacus and is an unashamedly premium product. It has a high waterproof rating of 20,000 and an industry-leading breathability score of 50,000. That means it is very waterproof, lightweight and breathable. The material also offers a 4-way stretch.

Further features of the jacket include a rubber anti-slip print on the shoulders to aid bag carrying, adjustable drawcord closure at the neck and extra elastic at the sleeves to enhance the fit.

I tend to size up in Abacus outerwear, and the Large fitted my 74kg, 173cm frame comfortably. On the course, the Pitch performs admirably. The technology of the fabric aims to optimize the body temperature (at 37.5’c), and I have to say it works. The apparel is waterproof, comfortable, easy to swing in and quiet. It’s worked well over a base and midlayer and on occasions, over a gilet as well. Furthermore, it packs away nice and compactly, which is an important consideration for those who carry their bag.

It’s no surprise that the Pitch 37.5 has won several awards, and it comes highly recommended.

PROS

  • Premium Construction
  • Waterproof
  • Stretchy and breathable

CONS

  • Fabric may be a little thin for some

Abacus Men’s PDX Waterproof Jacket

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

The PDX jacket is part of the premium X-series rage from Abacus and offers both waterproof and insulating properties. Features include heat-pressed quilt at the front (for insulation), 4-way stretch fabric to the sleeves, back and sides, a drawcord adjustable stand-up collar, drawstring at the body bottom and two roomy front pockets with waterproof zippers. All this adds up to a seriously practical and useful piece of apparel. It has a waterproof rating of 15,000 and the same score for breathability. Those figures aren’t quite up there with the Pitch but they are pretty reasonable.

I tend to size up in Abacus outerwear and the Large fitted my 74kg, 173cm frame comfortably. On the course the PDX works well in appropriate conditions, namely the cooler and showery conditions so common for golfers in the UK. It is really comfortable to wear and works well over a base and midlayer. Due to the nature of the PDX, it’s very much an outer garment, so I don’t think it would work so well in heavy, persistent rain. That said, it’s another strong offering from Abacus and will get plenty of use on and off the course.

PROS

  • Premium construction
  • Warm and waterproof
  • Stretchy and breathable

CONS

  • Bulky to stow away

RRP – £249 / $420

Puma Drylbl Rain Jacket

Reviewed by Matt Chivers

This DRYLBL Men’s Golf Rain Jacket is a brilliant golf jacket.

I don’t really see how or why you would ask for anything else in a golf jacket.

It keeps rain out, and also the cold. The outer surface of the rain jacket is the perfect defence to wet penetration, but the rain jacket is also roomy and extremely breathable. Naysayers could argue that the jacket doesn’t fit tight to your body and the colour is just black, both of which are probably true. But I felt safe, secure and comfortable while wearing this on the golf course, so how could I ask for anything else?

Together with the waterproof bottoms, this combination makes me feel ready and prepared for winter golf. Protection is at a premium with this golf jacket and I would certainly recommend it to my fellow large men’s golf jacket wearers.

Sunderland Typhoon Jacket

Probably the best value rain jacket on the market!

Sunderland have a mantra, #NEVERWEATHERBEATEN, and it’s written onto the inside pocket of this jacket. You can be as sceptical as you like, but I reckon I could wear this in a hurricane and still come out dry on the other side.

But the outer shell is very soft to the touch and remains so as you’re putting it on. This jacket moves with you, it doesn’t work against you.

The rain can’t permeate that layer however hard it falls. And believe me, I’ve seen it falling over the last couple of weeks. Gratefully, that liquid is not deflected either. It doesn’t run down off the jacket and onto your trousers as I’ve seen so many others do.

In fact, it’s so impressive you must remember to shake it off when you get into a drier space.

PROS

  • Light, airy and warm – but incredible at repelling water and superb in the wind
  • Soft feeling fabric is a major plus
  • PFC free
  • Sealed seams and, yes, a lifetime guarantee
  • Anti-snag Velcro cuff adjusters are worth their weight in gold

Sunderland Matterhorn Waterproof Jacket

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

Sunderland of Scotland has a long and proud history dating back over a hundred years. The Matterhorn jacket is described as ultra-lightweight yet high performing, constructed from a fabric that is breathable and windproof as well as waterproof.

It has a waterproof rating of 8,000 and a breathability score of 5,000. At first glance, these scores seem somewhat modest compared with the competition, but Sunderland’s helpful waterproof guide suggests that these numbers are more than sufficient for golf activities. Features include two large fleece-lined pockets with zip closure, elastic storm cuffs with additional velcro closure and drawstring-adjustable waist and hem. There is also an inner chest pocket with velcro closure.

The medium size fitted my 74kg, 173cm frame comfortably. Initially, I felt it was a little big, but with all the adjustability on offer, I was able to get it to fit neatly. On the course the Matterhorn works well. It feels to be at the warmer end of the waterproof range but is smart-looking and comfortable to wear and swing in. You can wear it over a couple of layers without any restrictions. It’s perhaps a little bulky to stow away and lacks a drawcord closure at the neck, but those are minor quibbles.

Given the lifetime waterproof guarantee and reasonable price, this is a jacket well worth considering.

Stuburt Kingfisher waterproof jacket

Reviewed by Gillon Fabbroni

Stuburt’s Kingfisher is their offering in the lightweight waterproof jacket arena.

Importantly it has a 10,000 waterproof rating and 5,000 breathabiltiy. The technology seems to be up there with good weather proofing performance.

Stuburt describe the appearance as modern and clean and I cannot argue with that. I tested the black model but it comes in a striking dijon and also French navy.

The fit was really snug. As with other Stuburt stuff I have tried it is a bit smaller than other manufacturers so I would recommend going up a size. I could not tell from the website whether the material has any stretch but if it does it was minimal. This makes ensuring you have a suitable size to prevent restriction when you are swinging the golf club.

The pockets and main zip look reassuringly waterproof.

Oscar Jacobson Greylands Waterproof Jacket

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

After trying multiple waterproof jackets for the season ahead, the Oscar Jacobson Greylands option is by far my favourite. Lightweight, highly breathable and has an excellent design.

I tested the jacket over a couple of rounds, and whilst I don’t particularly enjoy playing golf in the rain, for round one, it did make for suitable testing conditions for the Greyland jacket! The garment performed excellently, and the taped seams and waterproof zipper kept me perfectly dry. Performance when playing wasn’t affected, despite being so water-tight there is ample mobility from the top to bottom of my swing.

Personally, I am a fan of plainer colours on the golf course, but this black and pewter option was still very easy on the eye.

Additionally, the subtle OJ branding on the front and back, and hidden zipped pockets give the product a very premium and clean finish. Another helpful addition is the velcro straps on either side of the jacket are great for adjusting the tightness of the jacket around your stomach area.

Ashworth Preston Waterproof Rain Jacket

Reviewed by Max Mcvittie

A personal pet peeve of my is when golf jackets and waterproofs make a loud rustling sound whilst standing over a ball at address. Happily, for me this isn’t a massive problem with Ashworth’s latest waterproof jacket for 2024.

The brand says they have included quiet fabric in the construction which reduces noise disruption, and I have to say it is noticeable. Don’t get me wrong, it hasn’t been eliminated but there is a noticeable difference, and it doesn’t quite grind your gears as much.

This rain jacket is also very lightweight and comfortable to wear and, importantly, doesn’t restrict swing movement. It’s great for packaging in a golf bag or a travel bag and has all the features to help keep you dry.

Although the price is quite high you do get a lot for your money and are investing in a premium jacket. A jacket that doesn’t just act as a premium product but looks like one.

Men’s Under Armour Drive Rain Jacket

Rain jackets are every golfers nemesis. Often bulky and restrictive, most only wear them when the conditions dictate.

This Under Armour Drive Rain Jacket was comfortable as soon as I put it on. With adjustable cuffs and a drawstring at the bottom, you can make the necessary changes so that it doesn’t flap. It would have been nice to have adjustable sides for a more snug fit but this certainly isn’t a deal breaker.

The full length zip means you can get the jacket on and off easily, with 2 fully zipped hand pockets for any valuables. Like the matching trousers, the breathable material left you feeling protected from the elements without overheating.

As is always the case with waterproofs, the proof of the pudding is how dry your clothes are at the end of the round and this jacket passed with flying colours.

Adidas Climaproof Waterproof Anorak Golf Jacket

This is probably my favourite piece of golfing clothing I’ve had in a while. I’ve had a few golf anoraks over the years, one of which was an Adidas offering, and this is easily the best I have worn. It is waterproof, offers solid protection in even the most tricky of weather conditions and works to keep the golfer warm all whist allowing golfers to swing freely without being restricted.

The design is bold, but it is one I like. It’s of course a modern golf look but I’m all about that, I love where golf fashion is heading, and this is the anthesis of that. I think the cameo like design is cool and i would certainly wear this away from the course as well as on it. A slight downside is the price, but you are getting a quality anorak for your money.

The design is very sleek and compliments the wearer’s physique nicely, with adjustability for the cuff’s chest, and waist to make sure it fits as snugly as possible.

This jacket is designed to be worn on top of other clothing so it doesn’t offer much warmth, however that does mean it is much more versatile as you can remove or add under layers to suit the temperature whilst remaining completely dry.

The lining is comfortable when on and the material has a slight stretch to it which I think is necessary for waterproofs to give them a bit of mobility when swinging a golf club. They were a bit on the neat side around the glutes  so I would err on the side of going up a size.

Galvin Greens Alan waterproof trousers are an excellent premium waterproof golf trouser, with several features that make them stand out. The most essential feature with this product is its water resistance and these trousers are 100% waterproof meaning you won’t be getting wet out on the course with these on, especially due to the sealed seams which prevents water from seeping where it otherwise could.

These trousers are well designed to protect you from the elements as they have useful waterproof flaps to cover the two front pockets and the single rear pockets so you can store valuables like your phone in them without worrying, they’re getting wet.

The Alan Waterproof Trousers are also very easy to put on and take off with a long zip on both ankles allowing for more room so you can put them on with your shoes already on, perfect for when it’s already raining. There’s also an adjustable toggle which allows you to change the tightness of the elastic strap which holds the trousers to your waste.

With a minimal style and robust waterproof features, you can’t go very far wrong with these trousers.

  • Premium materials
  • Windproof
  • Easy to get on/off

  • None

Galvin Green Arthur Waterproof Pants

There has hardly seemed a time when Galvin Green haven’t dominated the waterproof market. They genuinely changed the game and you open their product and just expect quality.

In that sense, the Arthur carries on the tradition. They make you indestructible in the worst of the weather. Breathable, hard-wearing but light, there is nothing the elements can throw at you that you cannot withstand.

I would say to be a little mindful of the sizing. I’m a small medium and these were still slightly tight round the waist. That’s without a trouser belt getting in the way.

But, that aside, the Arthur’s sleek design, and fabulous performance, continues to set the standard in what to expect in waterproof trousers.

PROS

  • Impressive performance

CONS

  • Check sizing

 Oscar Jacobson Paterson Waterproof Trousers

Reviewed by Christopher Vodden

The sporadic weather conditions us golfers have to face (especially here in the UK), means we require efficient garments to combat the impromptu adverse weather. The adjustable waist band and long zippered leg openings are perfect for this, it makes the process of putting on or taking off the trousers really fast but also comfortable over whatever layers you have on. Whether you have single or multi layers garments on underneath, the range of sizing’s the trousers can fit to allow for comfort and practicality without excessive planning.

My regular bug-bear with waterproof trousers is the baggy nature of how they sit on your legs. I prefer to play my golf quite freely without the nag of lots of material moving around when taking shots or moving around the course. The Paterson waterproof trousers are the opposite to this, they fit really around your legs and waist but can also be adjusted to fit well on top of other layers.

Oscar Jacobson haven’t left a stone unturned when it comes to keeping you dry. The Paterson trousers are built with a highly breathable waterproof material with fully tapered seams and waterproof zippers for protection against all the elements.

Ping Taran 3L Waterproof Trousers

Reviewed by Matt Coles

Waterproof golf trousers are a must throughout winter, even on dry days when the grass is wet from overnight rain.

They have a three-layered waterproof fabric, and a fully seam-sealed construction, all of which gives maximum waterproofing – up to 20,000mm. The trousers have been designed for comfort and functionality, with waist tabs and ankle zips to customise the fit of the trousers to make them unique to your body.

The Taran 3L Waterproof Pants offer two front pockets and a back pocket to provide all the space required for your balls, tees and more.

The trousers are best teamed with the Taran 3L Waterproof Jacket, which also provides the same level of waterproofing for those dreadful days on the course.

Ping SensorDry Waterproof Trousers

First and foremost when it comes to waterproof golf trousers you want them to do as advertised and when it comes to performance the Ping SensorDry Trouser is right up there, verified both on the course and off it while walking the dog!

I often find with waterproof trousers that they are oversized and baggy, owing to the fact they are usually worn over another pair of trousers. What I particularly like about the PING SensorDry Trouser is the fit. They have a fully elasticated waist but still have a performance fit and feel to them. The waist can still be adjusted with a hidden adjustable cord, though I did not find this necessary.

An essential for waterproofs is that they are easy to slip on over shoes when caught short in the rain and the ankle zip comes up to just below the knee meaning that is the case with the SensorDry.

Lastly the stretch material used is unrestrictive and makes the trouser very breathable. These trousers are a great lightweight option and ones I would highly recommend.

 ProQuip Stormforce Trouser

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

ProQuip is a Scottish golf clothing company founded in 1981.  Their golf weather wear is so trusted at the highest level that no less than 20 Ryder Cup Captains, on both sides of the Atlantic, have sent their teams into battle with ProQuip waterproofs in the bag.

The PX (for Performance-Xtreme) 8 stormFORCE rain trouser is new for 2024. The company describe it as their best-in-class rainwear and it comes with a lifetime waterproof guarantee.

Now, compared with jackets, rain trousers are a bit dull. But they need to do a few things well. Firstly, they do need to be waterproof. Next, they need to fit well. Thirdly, they need to be easy to put on and take off. Finally, they need to have a sound pocket configuration.

The PX8 stormFORCE rain trouser is made from the same fabric as the jacket. It is stretchy, soft, quiet and breathable . It is also absolutely waterproof. I tested it out in heavy rain on the course and remained dry and comfortable throughout.

As far as fit is concerned, it comes in no less than six waist sizes (from 30 to 44 inch). And each waist size is offered in five leg lengths (from 27 to 35 inch). The arithmeticians amongst you will have worked out that ProQuip offer an impressive thirty different sizes which I think is quite remarkable and will ensure you get a perfect fitting pair of trousers.

This perfect fitting pair of trousers is also easy to put on and get off due to a long and robust zip. There is also a choice of three press stud closures to the bottom of the trousers which allows adjustability.

And finally, we come to pockets. Some waterproof trousers have a combination of pocket and aperture allowing access to non-waterproof trousers beneath. These are almost invariably fiddly and perform poorly. With the ProQuip you get two roomy zip closure side pockets, and two further roomy rear pockets with velcro closure. This configuration is simple, straightforward and just works well. All other manufacturers please note!

So, as with the PX8 stormFORCE jacket, this garment comes highly recommended and gets a deserved 5 stars.

PROS:

  • First class construction and performance
  • Huge choice of size
  • Excellent pocket configuration
  • Excellent value

CONS:

  • None

Puma DRYLDL Rain Trouser X

Reviewed by Matt Chivers

I am a huge fan of the DRYLDL Rain Pant, and it will be easy to understand why when you get your own hands on them.

The black colour compliments the DRYLDL Rain Jacket very well. It is very smart, and they are very protective in wet and cold weather conditions.

Naysayers might argue the bottoms are too flappy and loose, which could be a problem in the wind while playing golf in poorer conditions in the winter. But this possible downside shouldn’t take away from the protectiveness of the waterproof trousers, which I cannot praise enough for their use and doing exactly what it says on the tin.

They go over the top of golf pants and shorts perfectly and I really like how the pockets have protective covers, keeping everything that is in them warm, dry and safe.

When wearing a full waterproof suit, you will feel ready and solid in your swing and walking around the golf course in tough conditions.

PROS:

  • Breathable and roomy which allows full movement of swing
  • Full movement of swing
  • Covers over the pockets are a really good feature
  • Extremely protective

CONS:

  • Wind might cause the bottom parts to flap

 Under Armour Golf Rain Trousers

The days of bulky, noisy rain trousers are over.

The Under Armour Rain Pants are incredibly easy to get on, with huge leg zips that mean you don’t even have to take your shoes off. I always find this an essential for rain trousers, as there is nothing worse than struggling as a heavy shower hits.

An adjustable waist band ensures a snug fit and once on, the soft shell look gives the impression that you are simply wearing normal golf trousers.

The two hand pockets and rear pocket all come with zips to help keep things safe but I preferred to leave them unzipped for my tees and golf glove.

The soft material gave great protection from the elements without making your legs too hot. Post round my trousers were totally dry – job done!

PROS:

  • Great fit
  • Leg zips for easy fitting
  • Look like normal golf trouser

Abacus Men’s Links warm waterproof trousers

Abacus is a Swedish brand that has a strong tradition of producing weatherproof golf rain gear: so much so that they have clothed the last six European Solheim Cup teams.

The Links warm waterproof trouser is badged as appropriate for wet weather in a variety of temperatures. It is made from a waterproof and breathable fabric with sealed seams. They are rated 10,000 for waterproofing and the same for breathability. This means they will combat most downpours and be breathable enough for golfing activities. The trousers have a brushed tricot lining for added warmth. There are four practical pockets and a two-button closure at the front.

What I love about these trousers is their practicality and versatility. They fit nicely, the material is stretchy and breathable, and they have kept out the water on all the times I’ve worn them. On one occasion, I had to go out to play in filthy conditions, and I was able to layer a dedicated waterproof trouser over the Links without any difficulty.

I first wore these trousers in April this year and certainly expect them to be a go-to piece of apparel over the upcoming cooler months. They come highly recommended!

PROS

  • Well-constructed and smart looking
  • Comfortable and quiet
  • Practical in a variety of weather conditions

FootJoy HydroLite X Pants

This is a really well-designed waterproof trouser from FootJoy.

It is lightweight, breathable and is waterproof enough with a rating of 20,000 mm.

There are four roomy pockets. The rear two pockets close with velcro. The front right-hand pocket has a zip allowing access to your trouser/shorts pocket beneath. There is a gripper waistband and belt loops/fly zipper which makes these a standalone pair of trousers.

On the course, they are easy to put on and off. They have stood up to showery weather with no problem and, when the rain stops and the sun comes out, they stow away very compactly.

They come in two colours and plenty of sizes, so you are sure to obtain a close fit.

At a very reasonable £135 RRP, and with a 3-year waterproof warranty, they come highly recommended.

  • Strong pocket configuration.

Sunderland Quebec Men’s Waterproof Golf Trousers

The Quebec waterproof golf trousers are the top of the range offering from Sunderland. They are made from a soft ‘Neverweatherbeaten’ fabric that is waterproof and warm, yet also breathable.

They come with a waterproof rating of 8,000 and a breathability score of 5,000. At first glance, these scores seem modest compared with some competitor brands, but Sunderland’s helpful waterproof guide suggests that these numbers are more than sufficient for golf activities. Features include an adjustable and elasticated (but no gripper) waistband, large self-contained, fleece lined pockets (which do not pass through to trousers beneath), a rear pocket with velcro flap and protective tape at the bottom of the trousers for added durability.

The trousers fitted true to size if worn as a standalone trouser but you might want to go up a waist size if you’re likely to be wearing these as a second layer. There is an impressive choice of no less than four leg lengths. As with the Matterhorn jacket , these felt to be at the warmer end of the waterproof range so are more useful in colder conditions. They feel to be well made and yet do fold up reasonably compactly.

In summary, I think these trousers will work best in colder wet conditions. They have a lifetime waterproof guarantee and are very good value.

PROS

  • Useful features
  • Good range of sizes
  • Durable construction
  • Lifetime guarantee
  • Good value

  • Can get a bit hot

 Adidas Rain.RDY golf trousers

There is nothing sexy about a pair of waterproof golf trousers. They are a necessary inclusion in your winter golf bag but not often something a golfer is pleased to put on or enjoy wearing.

The Adidas Rain.rdy golf trousers are super lightweight and easy to get on and off. I actually would be pretty happy wearing them with shorts or even nothing underneath as they aren’t super baggy and a terrible fit like most pairs of waterproof trousers.

They are extremely waterproof and I really like how quiet the trousers are when on and marching around a wet golf course.

The zip pockets offer another layer of protection from the rain too.

You will not find a better value for money pair of waterproof trousers, in my opinion, this winter.

Callaway Golf Stormlite III Watreproof Trousers

I will usually put up with pretty horrendous conditions before I reach for waterproof trousers. The Callaway Stormlite III, however, seriously impressed me. The pair I tried were all black (well caviar according to Callaway) with a subtle white Callaway logo. Very smart looking. Their performance was fantastic however. Fully waterproof with a 2 year guarantee. They are also breathable, have taped seams and waterproof zips and pockets. The half-elastic waistband which is also adjustable means you can get a nice fit but still have plenty of freedom to move. A lot of thought has gone into their design. They are nice and light and will be a regular fixture in my winter bag.

Under Armour Unisex Drive Storm Gloves

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

As part of Under Armour’s 2024 Autumn Winter launch, they have released the unisex UA Drive Storm Gloves as part of their accessory range. These gloves are designed to combat the wet winter weather through solid grip on your clubs and keeping your hands dry during rainy days.

Admittedly I haven’t been an avid user of winter gloves like these in the past, only due to delirious optimism of ‘it won’t rain too much’. Now 3 years into my golfing lifestyle I have quickly realised that these are a necessity for any golfer looking to get out in the winter (or those summer downpours).

The Drive Storm gloves fit the bill perfectly, they look really smart in the plain black colourway, and I am sure it is no coincidence that this also helps keep the clean look in what might be muddy conditions.

The technology in the gloves are also really impressive, they are designed with a bonded knit fabric on the back of the hand to repel water from getting into the glove which I can certainly account for. Secondly, the synthetic leather palm is very effective in sustaining your grip of the golf club throughout your round of golf.

Overall, I would certainly recommend these gloves if you are planning on getting out this winter. They look great and will certainly help out on the course and a great wet weather golf glove option.

PROS:

  • Look smart
  • Effective in the wet
  • Enhances grip

  • None

MacWet Winter Climatec Gloves

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

MacWet are a sub-brand within Glenmuir/Sunderland. They’re renowned for their excellent gloves that are designed to make playing golf in the rain so much easier. This was my first time testing MacWet gloves and so I was looking forward to seeing how much they could help.

The Climatec gloves are unisex and are designed to provide warmth and comfort during those cooler months when it rains. On my hand they didn’t feel overally thick and so I wasn’t sure how much warmth they would provide when wet.

MacWet gloves don’t follow a conventional sizing guide with a numerical scale as a guide. I measured my hand and determined I was a 7.5 which is a medium on their chart and this fit snug but well.

PROS:

  • Fits well
  • Comfortable fit
  • Added warmth

CONS:

  • Took a while to dry off after use

RRP: £30 / $45

Sizes: XS, S, M, M/L, L, XL, XXL

MacWet MicroMesh Original Gloves

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

These gloves from MacWet boldly promise ‘All grip, no slip’. They come in a unisex range of no less than eight sizes, which enables you to get an excellent-fitting glove for greater feel, control and sensitivity. The palm is constructed from Aquatec micro fibre, which offers excellent wet weather performance, breathability and durability.  The back of this glove is made from mesh, which works better in warm and wet conditions.

The gloves run true to size with a sturdy velcro closure giving a secure fit. They provide tremendous wet weather performance with absolutely no slipping, even in heavy rain. I would say that these are not suitable for taking on and off, and they can start to feel a little cold in prolonged rain. So, you might want to carry some winter mitts, to stay warm as well as dry, if you choose these over the MacWet winter gloves.

Having owned a pair of the Micromesh Originals for several years I can attest to their performance and durability, so they come highly recommended.

PROS:

  • Excellent wet weather performance
  • Durable
  • Good range of sizes.

CONS:

  • Not to be taken on and off.

RRP: £30 / $55

Sizes: XS – XXL (Eight sizes)

Rife Men’s Rain Gloves

Reviewed by Matt Chivers

Getting a good grip in the rain is difficult. These gloves from Rife are most notable due to the non-slip silicone texture throughout the palm, index finger and thumb. They are thin and comfortable and dry quickly.

I tried them with one and two gloves on. When wet, the grip is best with both gloves on, which for most golfers will always feel a bit alien. These are not too bad in this regard.

These do provide adequate grip when wet and I tried them wet with one and two gloves on. The grip was much better with 2 gloves on.

They retail for a good price and are a sound purchase – a good stocking filler at Xmas for the golfing friend or relative.

PROS:

  • Quick drying
  • Good looks
  • Good price

  • Need to wear 2 gloves

TaylorMade Rain Control Gloves

Reviewed by Paul Miller

Rain doesn’t really enhance the golfing experience and one of the biggest issues is the loss of grip. I have tried a few brands of rain glove with varying success. The TaylorMade Rain Control Glove is near the top of the tree for these gloves.

They are made from element tech microfibre material, according to the website. Additionally, the nylon is described as exceptionally strong. This certainly translates into my real-world testing of them. They felt very comfortable, yet durable.

They really performed when playing shots when wet. The grip was excellent with both gloves on. I don’t imagine many golfers like wearing two gloves but they were as tolerable in this regard as any others I have tried. The grip was good enough that if not too wet, I could wear one glove.

PROS:

  • Good looking
  • Excellent grip in the wet

FootJoy RainGrip Gloves

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

The RainGrip glove from FootJoy is constructed from a micro-suede knit palm which offers a sure grip in rainy and/or humid conditions. The back of the glove is made from a quick drying knit material which provides stretch and breathability. The removable ball marker is a nice added touch.

There is a range of five sizes on offer in just one colour. The medium fitted me true to size. The angled velcro closure gives a secure fit, although the overall feel isn’t quite at the level of a premium leather glove.

The RainGrip is designed to work in the wet and it does that very well, providing excellent grip. It doesn’t do so well when the weather dries up so it shouldn’t be regarded as an all-weather glove.

I was pleased to see that it can be bought individually or as a pair and, considering the performance and quality, it represents excellent value.

PROS:

  • Can buy single or as a pair
  • Very grippy in the wet
  • Useful ball marker

CONS:

  • Can feel cold when wet

RRP: £15.99 / $25

Stuburt Rain Gloves

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

What I particularly liked about these rain gloves was that they were easy to take off when wet. In contrast to some of the competitor brands which feature a micro-suede palm, these gloves have a rubberised palm and finger construction which appears to shed rather than absorb water.

They give excellent grip in the dry as well as the wet, and I found them easy to take off, for example when putting.

My usual medium size in glove felt rather tight so you may need to size up. As with most rain gloves, it comes in one colour, black. It feels well-constructed but lacks any thermal properties so if you tend to feel the cold, then you may wish to try Stuburt’s thermal gloves

These gloves are only sold as a pair, but at £13.65, or less, they are good value for money and will form an essential part of your winter golfing kit.

  • Durable
  • Good value

  • You may need to go up a size

Adidas Hydrochromic Camo Bucket Hat

I was genuinely pleased to review this golf bucket hat, especially as I’m approaching 50 and items such as this seem to suit my present day mid life needs – both on and off the course.

Off the course, it’s great for rainy days, stopping rain from dripping into my glasses while watching the kids from the sporting touchline.

As the name suggests, this hat is completely waterproof. It comes in a choice of two sizes and the L/XL size fitted my head comfortably. It comes in just one colour, but this is a bit of kit designed for function rather than looks, so that’s ok.

The wide brim and rear peak successfully funnels water away from the neckline which is a potential weak point for even the best waterproof jackets. The adjustable drawcord and chinstrap ensures that you won’t lose your bucket hand even in the strongest wind.

I can’t pretend that you will look good in the ProQuip waterproof hat but you will certainly remain comfortable and dry, so it is a useful component of your winter wardrobe.

PROS:

 Ping SensorDry Bucket Hat

Reviewed by Ross Bousfield

I have to declare that I am a big fan of a bucket hat, particularly a waterproof one.

As a glasses wearer, a perennial issue for me on the golf course is rain, and keeping said rain off of my glasses. The Ping SensorDry Bucket Hat does this perfectly, the wide brim offers full protection, even if the rain is coming in at an angle. The front of the brim also has a firm but not particularly noticeable peak, which adds another layer of protection in keeping the rain off your face.

The hat is lightweight and breathable which is great, but the feature I really like is that it truly is a one-size-fits-all all. There is a hidden size adjuster, meaning that the hat can be adjusted to fit all. For those worried about windy conditions, then there is an adjustable cord which can be tightened to negate this, this cord is also removable.

For anyone looking for a top-performing bucket hat, I would 100% recommend the Ping SensorDry.

 TaylorMade Storm Bucket Hat

I have never owned this style of hat, to my cost. Rain running down one’s face is bad enough but when combined with wearing glasses it does make golf even more challenging.

The Storm Bucket Hat from TaylorMade is the answer. It’s 2.5-inch brim is just the right compromise between protection and remaining unobtrusive during the swing.

I tested the black version, which had a pleasing, almost velvety look and texture to it. The website states it is water-resistant, but the label on the hat says waterproof.

In testing, there was no evidence of any water absorption. It has a relaxed stretch fit construction, which keeps it in place comfortably. The printed TaylorMade logo is tasteful. This is something I will keep in my golf bag from now on.
