American Airlines serves over 200 million passengers each year, with more than 500,000 passengers flying on its planes daily. In 2024, the airline also flew 2.1 million flights spanning 1.8 billion miles.
While clearly busy, American Airlines has lagged behind some premium competitors, including Delta Air Lines and United Airlines, in terms of profitability. The airline has underperformed in part because it hasn’t been providing the same level of premium experience.
The airline is working to change that as it’s been rolling out improvements, including some new lounges and other upgrades.
The airline also routinely makes changes to its network to adjust to shifts in demand, including one recent decision to cancel some flights permanently.

American Airlines permanently cancels these flights
Airline Geeks announced the change to American Airlines’ flight plans on Monday, September 29, 2025. According to Airline Geeks, American Airlines will cancel the following flight:
- Dallas/Fort Worth to Eugene, Oregon
Airline Geeks said this change was first identified in Cirium Diio’s schedule update. Cirium Diio is an airline analytics platform focused on the aviation industry that collects data and monitors air travel trends.
American Airlines has operated this flight since 2021, so this marks the first time in four years that passengers have been unable to fly on American directly between these two destinations.
When does the American Airlines flight cancellation take effect?
The flight connecting Dallas/Fort Worth and Eugene, Oregon, used to operate year-round but recently switched to seasonal.
As a result, it last flew on August 5, 2025. While the flights would ordinarily return again in the summer of 2026, this won’t be the case next year.
Flights for the 2026 year will not run, since American has removed them from its schedule for the upcoming travel season.
American Airlines makes a tough choice when canceling flights
American Airlines provided a statement on the cancellation of the Dallas/Fort Worth flight to Eugene, Oregon, making clear that the airline had acted out of business necessity. The airline stated:
As part of a continuous evaluation of our network, American has made the difficult decision to discontinue service between Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) and Eugene, Oregon (EUG).
Affected passengers will be notified of the change
As with any situation when a flight is canceled, some passengers’ travel plans will be disrupted.
An American Airlines spokesperson indicated that the company is addressing this situation with customers who were scheduled to travel on the now-canceled flight. Here’s what a spokesperson said in a statement:
We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers and apologize for any inconvenience.
Passengers will have to adjust to the canceled flight
American Airlines has offered the Dallas/Fort Worth to Eugene, Oregon flight since 2021, although previous cutbacks did occur when it moved from year-round to seasonal.
This means many passengers in the area may have gotten used to having this flight option available over the last four years. They will need to adjust to the change.

American Airlines will still offer service to Eugene, though. According to Airline Geeks, passengers in Eugene will be able to fly to American’s hub in Phoenix.
For those whose flight plans for next year have been affected, it’s worth noting that American Airlines has indicated it will reach out, so travelers should receive solutions soon.
For many, this may mean booking with another carrier, leaving from a different airport, or coping with a connection during their travel.
