Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters tier list

Borderlands 4 introduces four Vault Hunters—Vex, Rafa, Armon, and Harlowe—and each have their own pros and cons.

Every Vault Hunter has a unique playstyle based around their available abilities. You can unlock and strengthen new skills as you level up. The gap between the four options at launch is slim, but a few choices stand out after testing them all.

Complete Borderlands 4 Vault Hunters tier list

To classify the Vault Hunters, I have used two ranks.

  • S-tier choices are clear from the rest regarding abilities, build potential, and how well they can clear the content solo at the highest difficulty.
  • A-tier choices are slightly off the top, but still decent if you like what you see. Once you master them, the A-tier names shouldn’t have any problem acing any challenge you might face on your adventure.

S-tier

Here are the S-tier choices in my books.

Vex is arguably the strongest character to pick if you’re not interested in playing the game in co-op. Her strength lies in summoning her minions; you also have different options. Dead Ringer summons copies of her, while Phase Phamiliar brings forth her favorite, Trouble. With her abilities, you’ll rarely be alone on the battlefield, which is a positive in the higher difficulties.

If you want to focus entirely on damage, you can do the same with the Incarnate Action skill. Her kit is versatile; you can even go for something sustainable or fully damage-focused. Similar to her is Rafa, aka Yolt.

Part of a military experiment, Rafa brings the big guns to the battle to demolish any enemy unfortunate enough to be caught in the crosshairs. Rafa is highly agile and feels extremely good with melee-focused builds. However, he also offers a lot of damage potential from the range, which is excellent for beginners. Out of the three Action Skills, Peacebreaker Cannons is best suited for those wanting to enjoy a solo adventure.

A-tier

Here are the A-tier choices

  • Amon
  • Harlowe

Amon is the most beginner-friendly character to choose from. He is big, strong, and doesn’t need to hide. He’s the perfect Vault Hunter to pick if you don’t want to hide and chop down waves of enemies effortlessly. The Cybernetics ability tree is my favorite due to how peculiar the effects are. You can summon your whole arsenal of weapons (including gigantic swords) and throw them at enemies. His attacks can also do additional AoE damage upon kills, which is a bonus in certain situations.

Onslaughter, on the other hand, emphasizes both defense and offense. He gets Shield Regeneration, more mobility, and bonus explosion damage. Scourge is also a good alternative, but it feels too defensive for my liking.

In contrast to the other three names in this guide, Harlowe has the best countermeasures to control enemies. Her Flux Generator Action Skill creates an Energy Field that traps enemies and deals damage over time (to everyone trapped inside). All allies inside the Energy Field gain Overshield, and Harlowe can reposition the trap by picking it up and throwing it at a new location.

Both CHROMA Accelerator and Zero-Point feel limited in what they do. These are excellent abilities in boss battles, but you’ll want something else against mobs of enemies. Remember that we will get at least one more Hunter as part of the official roadmap, so expect to see some changes to this guide in the next few months.
