Skyrim’s lead designer says Elder Scrolls 6 should be more like Baldur’s Gate 3

One of the top minds behind The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim spilled the beans on a bunch of their thought process behind a game that feels like it may never come out, and he had some fun ideas to discuss.

In a new interview with Press Box PR, Skyrim’s lead designer Bruce Nesmith offered their insight onElder Scrolls 6 and even the future of Fallout, and he had some interesting things to say about what he would do with the games moving forward.

Nesmith left Bethesda in 2021 during Starfield’s development, so he’s now on the outside looking in on whatever Elder Scrolls 6 may be, whenever it comes out. Obviously, though, he’s got a unique perspective on things since he was part of the company for many years, and a few things stand out in the interview.

Nesmith said that he thinks ES6’s world should “be more fluid” and “more dynamic,” because previous games in the series “have become less dynamic in order to meet the needs of what the games needed.” In that same vein, he also said that it should take some cues from another massively successful recent RPG: Baldur’s Gate 3.

“I also think, to look at Baldur’s Gate 3 and draw lessons from that mash (sic!) hit, that part of what made it so popular is that it felt like all choices were meaningful because you made a choice and it made a big difference in your play,” Nesmith said.

Baldur’s Gate 3 and Skyrim are quite different RPGs in gameplay and presentation, but Nesmith doubled down on wanting ES6 to be more dynamic and evolve with player choice.

“Bethesda games have maybe pulled back from doing that a little bit,” he continued. “The focus is on putting your toys away but in these games you do something in the thieves guild quest line that completely changes what becomes of the mages guild, for example. The world and the game is changed because of your choices. Have it make a real impact.”

Nesmith said that he’d be doing these things if he were still at Bethesda because “the gaming community has spoken and said they want games like Baldur’s Gate 3 where their actions feel like they have impact in a broader sense.”

In addition to just about everything, since next to no information has been revealed about the game since it was announced all the way back in 2018, one of ES6’s main questions for fans is what the game’s setting will be. While many believe ES6 is going to be set in Hammerfell, Nesmith has different hopes, in that it should be placed in the Elven lands of the Summerset Isles.

“I think that would be a break and a change from the more gritty and ordinary stuff that has been done with the Nords and Cyrodiil,” he said. “It would allow you to go back a little bit into the high fantasy and I’ve seen what the Elder Scrolls Online guys have done with that region. I think they did a bang up job and you could tell some really cool stories there and make it a little more elf-centric. The elves have always been kind of sitting on the side and it would be cool to make them more front and center.”

Nesmith had a lot more to say in the lengthy interview, so be sure to check out the full thing here.
