How does Tumble Climb work in R.E.P.O.?

A R.E.P.O. Monster Update mechanic, the Tumble Climb feels more gimmicky than others. While the Tumble Grab is an absolute game-changer, offering various ways to counter enemies without losing health or draining stamina, the Tumble Climb proves to be a bit more finicky in its design.

Here’s everything you need to know about the R.E.P.O. Tumble Climb! upgrade before heading into your next run.

How to use Tumble Climb in R.E.P.O.

First, you need to buy the Tumble Climb! upgrade from the Service Station. The simplest way to explain how it works is to position yourself at a wall and Tumble Launch (press ‘Q’) to the ground. Wait for the border on-screen to switch from red to yellow, meaning you can interact with objects. The cursor will swap from yellow to blue, letting you begin your climb. You will lose stamina as soon as you start moving during Tumble Launch.

To climb, hold left-click and pull your mouse towards you, forcing your semibot to look down. You have to then quickly look up, click and pull yourself up at another part of the wall to climb even further. Repeat this until you’re where you want to go (if trying to reach balconies or shelves), or when you’re out of the enemy’s line of sight.

The more upgrades you buy and use, the faster you can climb and the less stamina you consume. Tumble Climb lasts approximately eight seconds on base 40 stamina. Because you cannot immediately begin climbing after entering Tumble state, you’re at risk of getting killed by the very monster you’re trying to avoid.

Is Tumble Climb worth it in R.E.P.O.?

Based on what I’ve played so far? No, the Tumble Climb isn’t worth buying. Comparing the Tumble Climb to the superior Tumble Grab or even the Double Jump proves that it isn’t worth the cost of the upgrade unless you’re willing to invest in it like it’s your next R.E.P.O. build. The usefulness of the Tumble Climb lies in consuming multiple upgrades, where this mechanic increases in functionality and efficiency.

At the time of writing, the Tumble Climb is more of a situational mechanic, where its helpfulness rises the more upgrades you have, especially if you’re up against ground monsters. But as you know, seeing specific monsters isn’t guaranteed. While you’ll want more health and stamina regardless of which level you’re heading into or which Moon modifier is active, the Tumble Climb can put you in a bad spot, where running to cover or hiding could save you without the added risk.

The Tumble Climb is only useful when there’s nothing for you to stand on or to save you from falling into a pit. But once again, doing so requires a lot of stamina. A lot of monsters (particularly the Loom) have a max range where they cannot reach you if you’ve climbed high enough. But there are ways around this without the Tumble Climb. It is, however, a godsend if you have the stamina and load into the Museum of Human Art, for any monster that cannot fly will soon forget about you clinging to the wall and taunting them while twerking.
