Puma Pom Golf Beanie

My word. Wearing the Puma POM Beanie is like welding a radiator to your head. It is so warm, that even the cold chills of an October morning didn’t stand a chance of freezing my skull. If I hadn’t made it clear already, this beanie will keep you well-insulate, which is the aim of the game when playing golf in the Autumn and Winter.

Puma makes great headwear and great beanies. I have long been a fan, and this POM Beanie is another quality addition to the portfolio. The material is thick, very thick and it is the most engrossing thing I’ve had on my head since sliced bread. If anything, it was slightly too big for me, which I suppose is better than having one that leans on the small side.

The pattern is cool. It is stylish and seems to fit the mood of the Autumn and Winter months.

PROS

  • Very warm
  • Tight to your head
  • Nice pattern

  • None

 Under Armour Halftime Pom Beanie

Reviewed by Max McVittie

The right beanie can make all the difference in making a cold, winter round of golf more bearable. I do believe that this can be a game-changer for winter golf. A well-designed comfotable beanie that will help you stay warm throughout your round.

I really love the stuling on the piece and color scheme. The white and blue looks sleek, professional, and oozes style. A light and soft beanie is ideal, something that is not going to weigh your head down, when the chin already begins to lower through a bad round.

The soft lining and material doesn’t result in any discomfort. I don’t always wear a beanie for the simple reason of it itching too much on my head. But, I had no such problems with this Under Armour hat.

It has a real premium feel to it.

I’m often left debating, before a round, whether to wear a beanie. There will be no such debate needed this winter as when the temperatures hit rock bottom, I’ll be rocking this new Under Armour beanie.

PROS:

  • Warm
  • Great looking
  • Soft lining

CONS:

  • Not everyone will be a fan of the styling

 Ping Classic Bobble Hat

Reviewed by Dan Murphy

No self-respecting British golfer would head out in the winter months without a bobble hat to hand.

It feels like entire months can pass without the daily ritual taking place of pulling on a bobble hat and enjoying the snug warmth. What I particularly like about the Ping Classic Bobble Hat is that once it is drawn over your ears it stays there. There is nothing worse than a bobble hat that works its way upwards the longer you wear it until you realise that it is just perched on the top of your head.

I like to keep my bobble hats nice and simple and this one is ideal. It’s less of a fashion statement to me than a utilitarian item that continues to do its crucial job round after round and is just as useful away from the course as it is on it.

PROS:

  • Stays in position
  • Fits snuggly
  • Warm

CONS:

  • Others may prefer additional styling

Sizes: One size

Colours: Black / White

RRP: £20

 Galvin Green Insulating Golf Hat

Reviewed by Steve Carroll

The humble hat is a much-neglected piece of golf wear. We’ll largely stick any old bit of material on our bounces and hope for the best.

In that market, the Galvin Green Leighton really is a gold-star piece of kit. What’s so special about it? Two things. For a knitted hat, it’s incredibly warm thanks to the thermal lining but doesn’t carry the associated weight that usually accompanies such protection. You’re not going to feel like you’re wearing a crown.

The second is it performs spectacularly well in wind and rain, particularly the latter, which can often leave your head sodden after a couple of holes and reaching for a replacement.

Some of you are going to baulk at the price tag – a familiar theme with Galvin Green. £39 is a lot of cash for what is essentially a bobble hat.

But this one will get through 18-holes in the worst of the weather without requiring replacements, and that is a compelling argument – a worthy contender for the best winter golf hat 2024.

PROS:

  • Very warm
  • Great in the rain
  • Still breathable

CONS:

  • Premium price

Sizes: One size

Colours: Black/Forged Iron/White – Navy/Cool Grey/White – Blue/Navy/White

RRP: £39

Lyle & Scott Merino Wool Blend Beanie

If you are, like me, follically challenged, then a good beanie in winter is a must. A cap just doesn’t cut it when the mercury plummets but beanies can have their issues. Some weigh you down like lead when it rains, others threaten to cut off the blood supply to your brain. None of these issues apply to the Lyle & Scott Merino Wool Blend Beanie. It’s spectacular in every way. Very light and incredibly soft, thanks to that merino, it’s extremely comfortable to wear. Don’t be alarmed that it’s ‘one size’. It stretches magnificently to fit any head shape and it remains light even when the rain is falling. Some of you may raise an eyebrow at £35 for a hat but it is a purchase you won’t regret.

PROS

  • Very, very soft
  • A stretchy and comfortable fit
  • Light – even when in the rain

CONS

  • A little on the pricey side

RRP: £35

Colours: Moonlight / Berry / Black

J.Lindeberg Men’s Stripe Golf Beanie Hat

Reviewed by Tom Bullough

As part of J Lindenburg’s autumn winter collection, they offer up the ‘Striped beanie’ – which is available in 5 different colours.

I got to take a look at the grey marl version which I was very pleased about. It has a simple but effective design, the company name printed across the bottom of the item which adds a fashionable look a simple item.  The colourway splits between the primary grey marl colour, then a white bobble and branding print.

The item is designed with predominantly a cotton material which works perfectly for a comfortable wear but also keeps you suitably warm throughout your round.

Overall, this is a solid addition to add to your collection if you’re in the market for a new beanie. It looks really stylish both on and off the course and will keep you comfortable and warm on those colder days.

It has a lovely soft lining and is, unsurprisingly, extremely comfortable. The internal lining has a thermal fleece-lined construction. This thick lining is perfect for the colder weather due to the amount of warmth it adds.

This is a perfect addition to your bag for winter golf – added bonus being that it is available at a reduced price.

TravisMathew Mapes Beanie

Sometimes it’s not enough to be doing an activity that you enjoy, sometimes you need to be wearing that activity as well. This hat is an example of that, with a funky pattern depicting a golfer driving a golf cart.  TaylorMade Ribbed Knit Beanie

Reviewed by Paul Miller

As a fan of the bobble hat I have never really considered the beanie – my head size, well, is big – so was not expecting much from the TaylorMade Ribbed Knit Beanie.

From the moment I put it on, I was impressed by how soft and comfortable the fabric felt. The ribbed design adds a stylish edge while providing just the right amount of stretch for a perfect fit.

Playing golf while wearing this beanie was no problem at all during chilly rounds. I felt wonderfully warm, yet it remained breathable enough that I didn’t overheat. The beanie stayed securely in place, even during windy conditions.

Its sleek design and subtle branding easily complements casual outfits when off the golf course.

Adidas COLD.RDY 3 Stripes Pom Beanie

Perfect for when the colder weather rolls around and you can see your breath in front of your face as you line up a putt (probably not for a birdie). I found it seals in the heat really efficiently without being uncomfortably tight on your head. A common issue I have with bobble hats is that they tend to be really itchy. That certainly isn’t the case with this Adidas one. I had no problems with comfort and to top things off i think the design is fairly mega. I like how Adidas have embraced their three-stripe design more with their golf gear on the whole this year.

 Farah Ross Bobble Hat

Reviewed by Tom Irwin

I absolutely love the Farah Ross bobble hat – up there with the best winter golf hats I have worn.

The bobble adds a fun touch that elevates the style, steering clear of the typical beanie look. I prefer my hats to fit snugly on my (big) head, and this one does just that while featuring a stylish turn-up.

The branding stands out nicely but maintains a subtle contrast in colouring—it’s bold without being over the top. Since I got this hat, I can’t seem to take it off – whether sat in the office or on the golf course (see the right pic above taken on the awesome Royal Portrush Golf Club – on Calamity Corner).

It’s a perfect blend of comfort and style, making it a go-to accessory for both casual outings and chilly days. Overall, if you’re looking for a fashionable and well-fitting hat, the Farah Ross bobble hat is an excellent choice!

PROS:

  • Well fitted
  • Subtly contrasted colours
  • It has a bobble!
  • Bargain at £8

 Abacus Nairn Beanie

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

The Nairn beanie from Abacus is made from 100% polyester and is soft and stretchy. It comes in just one size but fitted my large head perfectly comfortably and was surprisingly warm.

It comes in a choice of three colours, all in a camo style. I tested the version in navy, which I think is probably the best of the three options.

Although I prefer a bobble hat as my cool weather headgear of choice, this beanie was remarkably good to wear and has the added bonus that it will fold away ever so compactly in your golf bag.

So, I found that I rather enjoyed wearing this beanie, and it’s gone into my cool weather gear collection.

PROS:

  • Stretchy, warm and comfortable
  • Choice of colours
  • Folds away compactly

 Oscar Jacobson Avalon Bobble Hat

Time to consider those winter garments! Oscar Jacobson have released the Avalon bobble hat in time for the upcoming Autumn/Winter weather.

The construction of the bobble hat is to be thermal and wind-proof which I can vouch for. After playing a couple of rounds wearing the hat I can safely say it is ideal for keeping warm and being comfortable for the full day. The thickness of the material is also enhanced as it is designed with a turned-up hem around the bottom for extra warmth around the ears and forehead.

It is available in 3 colourways, all of which present in a simple style of patterned cotton, same coloured bobble on top and the Oscar Jacobson logo across the front of the turned up hem.

A helpful addition to your winter golf attire, rolls up well into your bag for those unexpected chilly days and looks smart on and off the course – it also goes well with the OJ snood.

Out on the course it was very comfortable to wear, kept me amply warm throughout the round and certainly ticked all the boxes required for a new beanie hat.

 Stuburt Noble Bobble Hat

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

If you are looking for a great value item to keep your head warm this winter then you may want to consider the Noble bobble hat from Stuburt.

It comes in just one size but it is certainly large enough to cover your ears and provide warmth. It does, however, lack a fleecy lining, which would have provided extra comfort.

Although there is just one size, there is a choice of three colours, all of which look pretty stylish. All have a horizontal stripe type design, which provides visual interest and can brighten up a normally dark winter waterproof outfit.

On the rolled hem, there is quite a prominent logo on the hat, which may limit the off-course appeal, but this is another great piece of kit at a low price from Stuburt.

  • Relaxed fit for warmth
  • Stylish design
  • Good range of colours

CONS:

  • Lacks fleece lining

Adidas Hydrochromic Camo Bucket Hat

I was genuinely pleased to review this golf bucket hat, especially as I’m approaching 50 and items such as this seem to suit my present day mid life needs – both on and off the course.

Off the course, it’s great for rainy days, stopping rain from dripping into my glasses while watching the kids from the sporting touchline.

On the course, it really helps keep rain out of my eyes amid those unexpected showers. The soft, waterproof, lightweight material feels comfortable and breathable, perfect for use in both the winter and summer months.

 ProQuip Waterproof Bucket Hat

Reviewed by Jonathan Taylor

ProQuip is a Scottish golf clothing company founded in 1981.  Their golf weather wear is so trusted at the highest level that no less than 20 Ryder Cup Captains, on both sides of the Atlantic, have sent their teams into battle with ProQuip waterproofs in the bag.

As the name suggests, this hat is completely waterproof. It comes in a choice of two sizes and the L/XL size fitted my head comfortably. It comes in just one colour, but this is a bit of kit designed for function rather than looks, so that’s ok.

The wide brim and rear peak successfully funnels water away from the neckline which is a potential weak point for even the best waterproof jackets. The adjustable drawcord and chinstrap ensures that you won’t lose your bucket hand even in the strongest wind.

I can’t pretend that you will look good in the ProQuip waterproof hat but you will certainly remain comfortable and dry, so it is a useful component of your winter wardrobe.

PROS:

  • Waterproof and comfortable
  • Wide brim stops rain going down neck
  • Choice of sizes

CONS:

  • Just one colour option

Sizes: S-M / L-XL

Colours: Black

RRP: £35

 Ping SensorDry Bucket Hat

Reviewed by Ross Bousfield

I have to declare that I am a big fan of a bucket hat, particularly a waterproof one.

As a glasses wearer, a perennial issue for me on the golf course is rain, and keeping said rain off of my glasses. The Ping SensorDry Bucket Hat does this perfectly, the wide brim offers full protection, even if the rain is coming in at an angle. The front of the brim also has a firm but not particularly noticeable peak, which adds another layer of protection in keeping the rain off your face.

The hat is lightweight and breathable which is great, but the feature I really like is that it truly is a one-size-fits-all all. There is a hidden size adjuster, meaning that the hat can be adjusted to fit all. For those worried about windy conditions, then there is an adjustable cord which can be tightened to negate this, this cord is also removable.

For anyone looking for a top-performing bucket hat, I would 100% recommend the Ping SensorDry.

  • Wide Brim
  • Waterproof
  • Adjustable

 TaylorMade Storm Bucket Hat

I have never owned this style of hat, to my cost. Rain running down one’s face is bad enough but when combined with wearing glasses it does make golf even more challenging.

The Storm Bucket Hat from TaylorMade is the answer. It’s 2.5-inch brim is just the right compromise between protection and remaining unobtrusive during the swing.

I tested the black version, which had a pleasing, almost velvety look and texture to it. The website states it is water-resistant, but the label on the hat says waterproof.

In testing, there was no evidence of any water absorption. It has a relaxed stretch fit construction, which keeps it in place comfortably. The printed TaylorMade logo is tasteful. This is something I will keep in my golf bag from now on.

Original Penguin Palm Spring Earl Bucket Hat

Original Penguin have released their Palm Spring Earl bucket hat in 2025. This isn’t necessarily for an Autumn / Winter collection and it isn’t waterproof so it would fit more as a fashion statement in the winter but certainly of use for sun protection on those summer days.

The style of the hat is smart, available in two colourways with some smart Penguin branding across the top and on the base of the hat.

I’d definitely be packing it for a golf trip, it rolls up well so is easily stored in your golf bag and could also double up as a windbreaker to stop your hair from wizzing all over the place!

The price point is good, available for only £24.99 it’s well worth considering if you’d like to add to your hat collection.
