Vikes down Jasper to win Regional

Vikes take title

JASPER —The Barr-Reeve Vikings tennis team continue into uncharted territory as they stunned Regional powerhouse Jasper, 3-2 at the Ed Yarborough Tennis Center.

The match was tied at 2-2, when B-R pulled out the No. 3 singles match as Eli Ash beat Charlie Knies 3-6, 7-5, 6-0 for the third point.

At No. 1, Viking Xavier Meiring lost to Elliott Rolwing, 4-6, 3-6, however Daniel Underwood beat Nicolas Aguilera 6-2, 6-3 in the second spot.

Vikings No. 1 doubles Levi Lester and Kierson Lengacher lost to Joel Levy and Cole Lampert 6-3, 6-3, but B-R added a point as Kyle Graber and Grant Armes beat Jett Springer and Sutton Brosmer, 6-4, 6-4.

The loss for Jasper was the first regional loss in 14 years as the Vikes moved to 22-2 with the win.

Barr-Reeve will play Avon at 11 a.m. in Jasper on Saturday. Elliott Rolwing of Jasper will now play North Daviess’ Coby Loheider to determine the individual sectional/regional champion also at 11 a.m.

Cougar’s Loheider advances

JASPER — The Barr-Reeve Vikings tennis team and ND’s Coby Loheider continued to advance in the Wednesday matches at Jasper.

The Cougar’s Loheider took on Carson Beck from Northeast Dubois on Wednesday evening at the Jasper Tennis Complex. Loheider picked apart a big-hitting junior in a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 marathon.

“I’m very proud of Coby. He has that don’t give up attitude. That’s a quality you love to have on your team,” ND coach Adam Schulte.

Loheider is now in a holding pattern until the team results are determined Thursday evening to see if a individual sectional championship is needed or not.

The Barr-Reeve Vikings Tuesday match at the Jasper Regional with Sullivan was initially delayed, however, that didn’t stop B-R from coming back with a 5-0 win on Wednesday. The win moved B-R to 21-2 for the season.

At No. 1, Xavier Meiring beat Hunter Pinkston 6-4, 6-4, Daniel Underwood beat Carter Mischler 6-0, 6-2 and Eli Ash beat Samuel Couch 6-2, 6-2 to complete the singles sweep.

In the No. 1 doubles match, Levi Lester and Kierson Lengacher went three sets to beat Jaxon Zollman and Spencer Hanks 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 2, Kyle Graber and Grant Armes beat Zane Abbott and Easton Monroe, 6-0, 6-1.

B-R takes Jasper on Thursday.

IHSAA Individual matches underway

JASPER – The IHSAA individual singles and doubles got underway on Tuesday at the Yarborough Tennis Complex in Jasper, although the team matches with Barr-Reeve, Jasper Sullivan and Lincoln were all pushed back to Wednesday.

In Washington’s two matches, Josh Meredith lost to Northeast Dubois’ Carson Beck, 3-6,4-6. The doubles team of Hayden Tomey and Brody Armes lost to Vincennes Rivet’s Miles Holka and Max Weiss, 3-6,0-6.

“It’s a tough way to end the season, but I couldn’t be prouder of this group. They battled all year, showed class in every match, and grew not just as players but as people. Losing in sectionals hurts, but these kids have a lot to be proud of,” said WHS coach Jason Johnston.

North Daviess Cougar’s No. 1 Coby Loheider took on Bloomfield’s Will Dowden Tuesday as well. Loheider’s steady play took down Dowden 6-4, 6-4.

Schulte said, “Loheider played well tonight. He was patient with his game. Coby was selective when he wanted to be aggressive and come into the net which forced Dowden into errors.”

Loheider takes on another tough tasked against NE Dubois’s hard hitter Carson Beck in his next match.
