Happy Halloween week! Enjoy this spooky season with a snack of your favorite candy, because the power rankings are back!
My computer fried itself and I’m writing this from my phone, but nothing was going to stop me from delivering these sweet, sweet rankings to the people.
A lot has changed since my last edition of these rankings, and it’s time to look at these teams more holistically. I’ve re-ordered the tiers a bit and you’ll notice some more movement than you normally would when I updated these each week.
While you’re reading this, I’ll be on the hunt for a new laptop. Let’s dive right in:
Tier 1: Super Bowl Favorites
This tier is for the locked-in title contenders. Teams won’t move into (or out of) this tier very easily.
1 — Kansas City Chiefs (5-3, UP 6)
Last week: W 28-7 vs. Washington Commanders
The Chiefs are getting their weapons back and this offense is starting to hum. Their win over the Lions proved Kansas City is for real, now they need to build momentum.
2 — Los Angeles Rams (5-2, UP 1)
Last week: BYE
There might not be a more complete, complimentary team in the league. The Rams own the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball, with the best defensive line in the league and a bevy of weapons on offense.
3 — Indianapolis Colts (7-1, UP 5)
Last week: W 38-14 vs. Tennessee Titans
Not only do the Colts have the most efficient offense in the NFL this season, they have one of the most efficient offenses we’ve seen in decades. If they can just get healthy on defense, they won’t really have a weakness.
4 — Detroit Lions (5-2, —)
Last week: BYE
There might be new names and faces involved, but the Lions haven’t gone anywhere. This team is a machine and they’re here to stay.
5 — Philadelphia Eagles (6-2, DOWN 3)
Last week: W 38-20 vs. New York Giants
It hasn’t always been pretty, but the Eagles are getting the job done. This defense is struggling a bit with injuries and a lack of depth, but look for Philly to address this at the trade deadline.
6 — Buffalo Bills (5-2, DOWN 5)
Last week: W 40-9 vs. Carolina Panthers
With the reigning MVP in QB Josh Allen, there’s nothing the Bills offense can’t do. However, their defense is vulnerable, and it might cap their ceiling as a team.
7 — Green Bay Packers (5-1-1, DOWN 2)
Last week: W 35-25 vs. Pittsburgh Steelers
This Packers team is frustratingly inconsistent. There are games where they look like the best team in the league, and others where it just isn’t working. I trust Green Bay’s ceiling, though.
Tier 2: Potential Contenders
While these teams might not be true favorites, they’re almost certain to make the playoffs at minimum. They might have the ceiling of a Super Bowl contender, but lack something to make me totally confident in them as such.
8 — Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-2, UP 1)
Last week: W 23-3 vs. New Orleans Saints
I’m not sure this team will ever be fully healthy. That said, it might not matter. Bucs QB Baker Mayfield is playing the best ball of his career and the defense makes plays. This might be the most fun team to watch in the league.
9 — Seattle Seahawks (5-2, UP 1)
Last week: BYE
With a suffocating defense and a relentless offense, the new-look Seahawks are one of the stories of the season so far. Seattle QB Sam Darnold is making the Vikings regret letting him walk in free agency.
10 — Los Angeles Chargers (5-3, DOWN 4)
Last week: W 37-10 vs. Minnesota Vikings
Injuries to the offensive line really hurt the Chargers for a few weeks there. But they’re starting to get healthier, and when Los Angeles QB Justin Herbert is protected, watch out.
11 — Denver Broncos (6-2, —)
Last week: W 44-24 vs. Dallas Cowboys
They’re winning games, but the offense has looked ugly at times in Denver. Still, if they can get back to basics on that side of the ball, this is a dangerous team.
12 — New England Patriots (6-2, UP 11)
Last week: W 32-13 vs. Cleveland Browns
They’re young, but they’re fun, and they’re playing with a ton of confidence. The Patriots have really found something this season, and though they were expected to be a year away, the future is now in New England.
Tier 3: Playoff Contenders
Not all of these teams will make it to the playoffs of course, but they are all teams expected to make playoff pushes. And who knows, once they get there, they could go on a run.
13 — Jacksonville Jaguars (4-3, DOWN 1)
Last week: BYE
Suffocating defense made up for inconsistent offense early, but the offense’s struggles have only gotten louder in recent weeks. It’s going to be difficult for the Jags to stay competitive in the AFC playoff race if they can’t figure it out.
14 — San Francisco 49ers (5-3, —)
Last week: L 15-26 vs. Houston Texans
I don’t think the Niners are as good as their record — injuries are catching up to them, and they have a negative point differential on the year. But even still, this team will be a tough out night after night, and they’re in the thick of the playoff race.
15 — Pittsburgh Steelers (4-3, UP 6)
Last week: L 25-35 vs. Green Bay Packers
Another team I don’t think is as good as their record, the Steelers play consistent offense but lack explosiveness. This is a veteran-laden team that has championship aspirations.
16 — Houston Texans (3-4, UP 3)
Last week: W 26-15 vs. San Francisco 49ers
The Texans are starting to find their footing, overcoming a slow start and a patchwork offensive line. Don’t be surprised to see them start stacking wins coming up shortly.
Tier 4: In The Mix
I won’t go as far as to call these teams actual playoff contenders, but they’re making it interesting. It’s still early, but with some sustained success, they could climb these rankings quickly.
17 — Washington Commanders (3-5, DOWN 4)
Last week: L 7-28 vs. Kansas City Chiefs
Injuries and a poor secondary have hamstrung this team, but this is still a fun, dynamic offense. On any given night, they can explode and put you away.
18 — Baltimore Ravens (2-5, DOWN 3)
Last week: W 30-16 vs. Chicago Bears
The Ravens could start building momentum in a soft stretch of their schedule. They’ll get two-time MVP QB Lamar Jackson back from his hamstring injury next week, though this defense will likely continue to struggle.
19 — Chicago Bears (4-3, UP 3)
Last week: L 16-30 vs. Baltimore Ravens
The Bears are a young team with a first-year head coach, so some ups and downs are to be expected. This season is all about the development of 2024 No. 1 pick QB Caleb Williams, which we’ll all continue to monitor.
20 — Dallas Cowboys (3-4-1, UP 1)
Last week: L 24-44 vs. Denver Broncos
If it weren’t for having the worst defense in the league, Cowboys QB Dak Prescott might be the MVP frontrunner. He’s playing spectacular football, keeping his team in games despite the defense.
21 — Arizona Cardinals (2-5, DOWN 5)
Last week: BYE
Now here’s a team that might be better than their record. The Cardinals have lost a bunch of heartbreaking games in the final moments, but their bye week came at a great time to reset and get healthier.
22 — Minnesota Vikings (3-4, DOWN 5)
Last week: L 10-37 vs. Los Angeles Chargers
The Vikings should be better than they are. They don’t have a quarterback, from a combination of injuries and poor play. The hope is that second-year QB J.J. McCarthy develops nicely, though he’s missed all but two games of his short career.
23 — Carolina Panthers (4-4, UP 7)
Last week: L 40-9 vs. Buffalo Bills
The Panthers got waxed by the Bills, but they’d been playing some good football before that. This isn’t a team with much margin for error, but third-year QB Bryce Young continues to look better and better.
24 — Atlanta Falcons (3-4, DOWN 6)
Last week: L 10-34 vs Miami Dolphins
Is there a more frustratingly inconsistent team in football? The Falcons have stacked blowout losses to the Panthers and Dolphins with marquee victories over the Bills and Vikings. It’s hard to evaluate this team.
25 — Cincinnati Bengals (3-5, UP 1)
Last week: L 38-39 vs. New York Jets
What a major letdown the loss to the Jets was. The reality is the Bengals just don’t have a good enough defense to consistently win games, even with their offense looking much improved with QB Joe Flacco under center.
26 — New York Giants (2-6, DOWN 1)
Last week: L 20-38 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Giants RB Cam Skattebo joins WR Malik Nabers on the list of brutal injuries to key skill players in this offense. On the bright side, rookie first-round QB Jaxson Dart continues to show flashes of high-end play.
27 — Cleveland Browns (2-6, DOWN 3)
Last week: L 13-32 vs. New England Patriots
If the Browns had any semblance of an offense, this would be a playoff team. Cleveland ED Myles Garrett had five sacks against the Patriots, adding to a historic season worthy of another Defensive Player of the Year award.
Tier 5: Better Luck Next Year
Who cares if it’s only Week 9? The season is already over. I think basketball starts soon….
28 — Las Vegas Raiders (1-3, DOWN 1)
Last week: BYE
The Raiders lack talent — sometimes it’s just that simple. Outside of ED Maxx Crosby, the defense doesn’t really have any long-term pieces, and the offensive line isn’t playing as well as they did a year ago.
29 — Miami Dolphins (2-6, DOWN 1)
Last week: W 34-10 vs. Atlanta Falcons
I honestly didn’t think the Dolphins had a performance like the Falcons game in them. It’s impressive, but it doesn’t change how bad this roster is nor how much upheaval the team is about to undergo.
30 — New Orleans Saints (1-7, UP 2)
Last week: L 3-23 vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Saints continue to be feisty, but it isn’t leading to wins. Rookie second-round QB Tyler Shough made his first regular-season appearance in the second half against the Bucs and it might be his time to start moving forward.
31 — New York Jets (1-7, DOWN 2)
Last week: W 39-38 vs. Cincinnati Bengals
With the news of the tragic passing of former Jet Nick Mangold over the weekend, New York got an emotional road victory for their first win of the year. The offense has looked good in spurts, and Jets QB Justin Fields overcame the noise to put on a show.
32 — Tennessee Titans (1-7, DOWN 1)
Last week: L 14-38 vs. Indianapolis Colts
This team, to me, is clearly the worst in the league. None of their games feel competitive and the offense just can’t move the ball consistently. The Titans will need to invest in better infrastructure for rookie QB Cam Ward next season.
