11 best cruises to Canada and New England

Canada and New England cruises are best known for taking mature travelers to experience vibrant autumnal foliage in multiple destinations.

However, the region's photogenic landscapes, charming ports and fresh local seafood make time ashore uniquely enjoyable for couples and families as well. Plus, late summer and early fall getaways can be convenient and affordable, especially if you already live on the East Coast.

New England and Canada cruises are mainly offered from late August through mid-October (although limited June and July dates are also available). They sail round-trip from New York City or Boston, or one-way between either city and Montreal or Quebec City.

Itinerary lengths for Canada and New England cruises range from seven to 11 nights. Ships typically call on ports in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island in Canada, as well as Portland or Bar Harbor, Maine, or even Newport, Rhode Island. High-end, smaller-ship cruise lines may offer more in-depth itineraries of 11 to 15 nights, with more inclusions and higher price tags.

It's important to book well in advance if you want to cruise during peak foliage weeks (generally late September to mid-October). Also, Newport, Bar Harbor and some less-visited ports on these itineraries do not have cruise piers. Transferring to shore via tender boat can be time-consuming, if not difficult or impossible, for passengers with mobility challenges.

Here are 11 of the best cruises to Canada and New England to consider.

Celebrity: 11-night Canada and New England cruises

Celebrity Silhouette. MICHEL VERDURE/CELEBRITY CRUISES

Celebrity Cruises is offering its "11-night Boston, Maine & Canada" itinerary on three dates in September and October 2026 and on four dates in September and October 2027.

The round-trip sailings from Boston aboard 2,886-guest Celebrity Silhouette call on Portland, Maine; Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Quebec City (where the ship overnights).

The overnight in Quebec City also offers an opportunity to enjoy one of Canada's most charming cities after dark. Don't miss the narrow cobblestone streets of historic Old Quebec, with its inviting cafes.

Who should go: This round-trip itinerary is a convenient option for couples or friends seeking to experience the highlights of New England and Canada during the autumn foliage season.

Celebrity's ships are designed with adults in mind. They offer multiple onboard bars and lounges for socializing — and the indoor, adults-only Solarium pool is perfect for relaxation as fall temperatures dip.

Holland America: 7-night Canada and New England cruises

HOLLAND AMERICA

Not all Canada and New England cruises are timed for leaf peeping. Holland America's seven-night "Canada & New England: UNESCO Sites and Quebecois Nights" itinerary — available on six dates from May to October 2026 on 1,964-guest Zuiderdam — aims to take advantage of the region's spring and summer weather as well.

The cruise embarks in Boston and disembarks in Quebec City. (An identical itinerary, just in reverse, begins in Quebec City and ends in Boston.) In between, Zuiderdam visits four additional ports: Portland, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. So, in just one week, it offers a sampler of two of Canada's Atlantic provinces and historic Quebec City.

In September and October 2027, Zuiderdam will also sail the same seven-night itinerary on three dates.

Who should go: Holland America attracts retirees and other passengers in the 60-plus age range, though summer sailings may see more multigenerational families. Zuiderdam offers a traditional onboard atmosphere along with six dining venues (including the pop-up Morimoto by Sea by celebrity chef Masaharu Morimoto). The ship also features Holland America's signature music and entertainment venues Billboard Onboard, Rolling Stone Lounge and World Stage, as well as two pools (one with a retractable roof in case of cool or rainy weather).

This particular itinerary has no ports requiring tender transfers, making all destinations accessible to most passengers with disabilities.

Norwegian: 7-night Canada and New England cruises

DANNY LEHMAN/NORWEGIAN CRUISE LINE

Norwegian Cruise Line has multiple ships offering Canada and New England itineraries from Boston, Philadelphia, New York City and Quebec City. For value, convenience and a megaship experience, check out the seven-night "Canada & New England Round-Trip Boston: Bar Harbor & Halifax" sailings aboard 3,903-guest Norwegian Breakaway. Sailing round-trip from Boston on four dates in August and September 2026, it calls on four appealing ports: Portland and Bar Harbor, Maine; Saint John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia.

A similar itinerary, also on Breakaway, is available on eight dates in August, September and October 2027. The seven-night "Canada & New England Round-Trip Boston: Eastport and Halifax" itinerary calls on Eastport, Maine, rather than Bar Harbor.

Who should go: Norwegian's Breakaway Class ships offer a resort-meets-theme park experience with a lively onboard vibe that appeals to couples, families and groups of friends. That said, the ships lack an indoor pool.

Cruises during the cooler fall months are best suited for those who enjoy the outdoors. Bar Harbor is the gateway to Acadia National Park, and Saint John offers access to the Bay of Fundy's legendary tides. They're also ideal for travelers who appreciate historic architecture, as Halifax offers access to the picturesque village of Peggy's Cove.

Oceania Cruises offers four 11-night New England and Canada sailings in September and October 2026. The voyages are aboard 1,200-guest Vista, which debuted in 2023 and offers a midsize ship experience with an emphasis on fine dining.

Vista sails between New York City and Montreal, offering port-intensive itineraries that include eight or more cities along the Eastern Seaboard. Cruisers might visit Quebec City and Saguenay in Quebec; Sydney and Halifax, Nova Scotia; Corner Brook, Newfoundland; Saint John, New Brunswick; Portland, Maine; Boston; and Newport, Rhode Island.

In September and October 2027, Oceania's seven 11- and 12-night Canada and New England itineraries will be split between Vista, which will sail from Boston, and the smaller 670-guest Sirena, which will sail from New York City.

Who should go: Oceania's premium cruise experience appeals to couples seeking an onboard ambience that combines culinary excellence with elegant decor and elevated service.

Vista features four specialty restaurants, a gorgeous grand dining room, a high-end buffet and pool grill and one of the most decadent afternoon tea services at sea. Standard cabins offer a modern look, sumptuous beds and spacious bathrooms. For a splurge, the larger suites will not disappoint discerning travelers.

Sirena was built in 1999 and fully refurbished in 2019, and it offers a more intimate cruise experience. It features two specialty dining options (Tuscan Steak and Red Ginger) in addition to its grand dining room and the casual poolside options.

Princess Cruises: 7-night Canada and New England cruises

A minisuite on Royal Princess. PRINCESS CRUISES

Princess Cruises offers multiple seven- to 14-night round-trip and one-way sailings to Canada and New England from New York City, Quebec City and Boston.

Our 2026 pick is the seven-night "Best of Canada & New England" itinerary aboard one of Princess' Royal Class ships, 3,560-guest Majestic Princess. The 2027 "Best of Canada & New England" itinerary will sail on sister Royal Class ship, Regal Princess, on three dates in September and October.

The round-trip sailing from New York City in October 2026 will visit Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Saint John, New Brunswick; and Halifax, Nova Scotia. In 2027, the itinerary is more New England-focused, calling on Newport, Boston and Portland, Maine, in addition to Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Who should go: Princess ships, even the newer vessels, offer a more traditional take on cruising that's popular with couples and groups of friends who enjoy a quieter experience — although the after-dinner sing-alongs in Crooners piano bar can get lively. Both Majestic Princess and Regal Princess lack waterslides and thrill-oriented activities, if those amenities are important to you.

Travelers who enjoy dining at different venues each night will appreciate the ship's multiple extra-fee and complimentary dining venues. Don't miss the superb individual pizzas served in Alfredo's Pizzeria on both ships.

In 2026 and 2027, Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 746-guest Seven Seas Splendor will sail a series of Canada and New England itineraries from New York City, Boston and Montreal.

For example, the 11-night "Magnifique L'Automne Cruise" sailing, which departs Sept. 28, 2026, is timed to allow passengers to enjoy regional foliage at its peak as the ship sails from Boston to Montreal. Who should go: Regent's all-inclusive luxury cruises — which include transfers, onboard beverages and dining, gratuities, Wi-Fi and unlimited shore excursions — have correspondingly luxurious prices. So, passengers are mostly affluent professionals and retirees who enjoy the seamless ease of an all-inclusive sailing offering top-notch service.

Connoisseurs of fine dining will be in their element with eight onboard restaurants, which include Chartreuse for fine French cuisine and Pacific Rim for flavorful pan-Asian menus. Plus, passengers can indulge their foodie passions with chef-led classes in the onboard Culinary Arts Kitchen.

Seven Seas Splendor and Seven Seas Grandeur do not offer an indoor pool for cool-weather swims.

SIMON BROOKE-WEBB/SBW-PHOTOROYAL CARIBBEAN

Royal Caribbean offers Canada and New England cruises from Baltimore and Bayonne, New Jersey, during both fall 2026 and 2027. To truly experience the Eastern Seaboard, try the nine-night "Canada & New England Cruise" sailing round-trip from the Cape Liberty cruise port in Bayonne in September and October 2026 aboard 3,858-guest Independence of the Seas. The itinerary visits Boston; Portland, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick.

In September 2027, the nine-night "Canada & New England Cruise" voyages are again offered round-trip from Bayonne on Independence of the Seas and visit Boston; Portland, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Sydney, Nova Scotia; and Saint John, New Brunswick.

Who should go: Independence of the Seas is designed to appeal to all ages, but September and October sailings attract more couples and retirees.

Independence of the Seas doesn't have all the bells and whistles of Royal Caribbean's newer, larger ships. However, it does feature 10 dining venues, 10 bars and lounges, Broadway-style entertainment, waterslides and more. It also has an adults-only, indoor Solarium pool and several outdoor pools and hot tubs.

Enjoying the region's colorful autumnal landscapes is the primary agenda on Seabourn's 12-night "Canada & New England Fall Foliage" cruises, scheduled in September and October 2026 aboard 600-guest Seabourn Ovation. In 2027, two 12-night sailings in October, also on Ovation, will offer similar port calls.

These sailings between New York City and Montreal visit Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Bar Harbor, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Saguenay and Quebec City in Quebec.

Who should go: Seabourn's all-inclusive, small-luxury cruise experience is reflected in its fares, so these itineraries require a generous travel budget. As a result, passengers are typically financially well-off couples, including international travelers, who appreciate the fleet's private club-style ambience and personalized service.

All cabins are spacious ocean-facing suites with private verandas. Seabourn Ovation might be small, but it still offers four onboard restaurants, including Solis for modern Mediterranean food and Sushi for traditional sushi and sashimi.

Silversea: 11-night Canada and New England cruises

For upscale cruising to New England and Canada, Silversea Cruises offers an 11-night "Bayonne, New Jersey to Montreal" itinerary in September 2026 aboard 392-guest Silver Shadow.

The voyage, which departs from the cruise port in Cape Liberty, New Jersey, includes calls on Newport, Rhode Island; Boston; Portland, Maine; Halifax, Nova Scotia; Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; and Saguenay and Quebec City in Quebec.

The same 11-night itinerary, once again on Silver Shadow, is also available in September 2027.

Who should go: Silversea passengers are generally wealthy, retired couples passionate about cruising on small luxury ships. They appreciate fine wines and elevated dining, such as the French cuisine offered in La Dame, one of four onboard restaurants. Nightlife on Silver Shadow is generally low-key, though there is entertainment in the theater and a small casino.

Silversea's fares include gratuities (and butler service), as well as complimentary dining, beverages and Wi-Fi, while All-Inclusive Plus fares add a per-person shore excursion credit.

Viking's 12-night "Eastern Seaboard Explorer" itinerary aboard 930-guest ocean ship Viking Mars is offered in August and September 2026 (three sailings), as well as in September and October 2027 (also three sailings).

Each one-way voyage sails from New York to Montreal (or vice versa, with overnights in each city), and the ship calls on Quebec City, Saguenay and Gaspe in Quebec; Halifax, Nova Scotia; and Boston.

Who should go: Adults-only Viking appeals to cruisers who appreciate a subdued onboard experience centered around learning about a destination via guest lectures and shore excursions. The cruise line's passengers tend to be retirement age or older.

Viking's fans love the ships' serene Scandinavian-inspired decor, complimentary spa thermal area and pricing that includes wine and beer with lunch and dinner, gratuities and one free shore excursion per port. The ship does not have an onboard casino, but two pools (one with a retractable roof) offer relaxation during sea days.

American Cruise Lines: 15-night New England cruises

AMERICAN CRUISE LINES

If you prefer a deep dive into New England history and culture and enjoy a small-ship ambience, American Cruise Lines' 15-night "Grand New England Cruise" on its 130-guest Patriot Class vessel, American Pioneer, offers the most comprehensive itinerary in the region. Available from June to September in both 2026 and 2027, this two-week, round-trip itinerary from Boston visits 15 ports in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire and Rhode Island.

The voyage calls on typical New England cruise mainstays such as Bar Harbor and Portland in Maine and Newport in Rhode Island. It also visits Bangor, Bath, Boothbay Harbor, Camden and Rockland in Maine; Portsmouth in New Hampshire; and Plymouth, Provincetown, Gloucester, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts.

Who should go: American Cruise Lines, which is the largest leisure ship operator in U.S. waters (including both coastal and rivers), appeals to Americans ages 65 to 85 who enjoy its casual onboard camaraderie and all-American philosophy. The cruise line's ships are built in America, every crew member is American, and food and beverages are mostly U.S.-sourced. American Pioneer also features eight Single Balcony staterooms for solo travelers.

You should think twice, though, if your must-haves include amenities such as a pool, hot tub, spa or international wine list. While mostly all-inclusive, this is also one of American Cruise Lines' priciest itineraries, with rates that average more than $800 per person, per night.
